Enhance your knowledge and understanding of how to choose and use picturebooks across all Primary Key Stages to to increase children’s motivation and attainment as independent readers and writers.

Through a range of interactive activities, this webinar will investigate how to identify and read high-quality picturebooks to develop deeper levels of comprehension and how drawing and following the authentic writing process of a published author can improve independent writing.

We will also demonstrate how to build a spine of picturebooks which can be included in a rich, progressive Primary English Curriculum, in line with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Framework and National Curriculum.

This is one of a series of webinars related to key chapters in CLPE's The Power of a Reading Rich Curriculum (SAGE 2020) which can be booked as a series to build expertise in subject specific practice and pedagogy in English.

What will participants gain?

  • An understanding of the place of picturebooks in a broad, rich English Curriculum.
  • Examples of high quality picturebooks that can be used with children across the primary years.
  • Specific subject knowledge in how to read illustration.
  • A knowledge of the specific reading skills and strategies that picturebooks support.
  • Examples of creative teaching approaches that support children’s engagement with and understanding of narrative.
  • An understanding of how picturebooks can be used as a stimulus for children’s own writing.

Through a range of interactive activities, we will investigate how well-chosen picturebooks, specific teaching of how illustration can be read and thoughtfully planned activities can increase children’s comprehension of language and engage children in deeper response in reading, as well as how picturebooks can be used to develop children’s own use of language and understanding of narrative structure; inspiring them to write creatively and independently.

Participants will be introduced to a wide range of picturebooks with examples that can be used from Early Years to Year 6 and practical ideas that can easily be transferred to the classroom.

I thought this training was absolutely fantastic. The trainer was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate and I left the session so motivated and with a long book list! There was so much information that I'd quite like to attend a second time to ensure I didn't miss anything. A really inspirational webinar, thank you.
