Enhance your knowledge and understanding in how to teach children in Nursery and Reception to read, guiding them through their first steps as a beginner reader by using literacy strategies specific to Early Years provision in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and Development Matters.

This one-day course is designed by experts in Early Years reading provision and develops subject knowledge in how to ensure progress in reading through the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience necessary in learning to read. Particular attention will be given to choosing and using high-quality children’s literature to support the needs and interests of children and to support a variety of reading practices which and proven to develop children's word recognition, fluency and comprehension, and which foster reading for pleasure across the Early Years Foundation Stage.

This course is one of four Teaching Reading courses tailored to the needs of children in Nursery to Year 6, meaning teachers can undertake one course on its own or attend all four courses to embed consistency of practice throughout their school.

What you will learn:

  • Understand how reading develops from the beginning and how to support progress and achievement in the Early Years;
  • The importance of building a culture of reading for pleasure and purpose from the beginning and how to develop strong reader identity in young children;
  • The reading practices and approaches that best support the development of different reading needs, including reading aloud, shared reading, group reading and individual reading;
  • How to identify the features of appropriate, high quality children's books and how to plan experiences around them that support key reading skills, strategies, knowledge and attitudes;
  • How to enable children to build word recognition skills, including using and applying growing phonic knowledge to decode words in real reading contexts;
  • A range of strategies and approaches that encourage early comprehension skills, fluency and stamina.

What participants will receive:

As well as a full day training and lunch, all participants will receive two high-quality children's books and planning notes to help put the strategies from the course into practice in the classroom.

Participants will receive joining instructions for the course one week before the training date. If you have any queries, please email courses@clpe.org.uk.
