Transforming Literacy using Non-Fiction Texts - Webinar

Enhance your knowledge and understanding of how to choose and use non-fiction texts across all Primary Key Stages to increase children’s motivation and attainment as independent readers and writers across a wide range of written forms. 

Through a range of interactive activities, this webinar will investigate how well-chosen information texts can be included in a rich, progressive Primary English Curriculum, to develop children as independent and engaged readers and writers, in line with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Framework and National Curriculum.

This is one of a series of webinars related to key chapters in CLPE's The Power of a Reading Rich Curriculum (SAGE 2020) which can be booked as a series to build expertise in subject specific practice and pedagogy in English.

What you will learn:

• Understanding of the importance of information texts to being literate;
• The features of a range high quality non-fiction texts that can be used with children across the Primary years;
• Knowledge of the specific reading knowledge, skills and strategies that non-fiction texts require and support;
• The creative teaching approaches that best support children’s engagement with and understanding of information writing;
• Strategies that develop children’s understanding of subject specific vocabulary, non-fiction voice and presentational features through deeper reader response and text analysis;
• Understanding of how non-fiction texts can be used as a meaninful stimulus for children’s own real world and cross-curricular writing;
• How children draw on reader knowledge to make careful choices around voice, language and presentation in their own information writing;
• How to build a range of quality non-fiction texts into a diverse, rich and progressive Primary English curriculum.

What will participants gain?

Participants will be introduced to a wide range of non-fiction texts with examples that can be used from Early Years to Year 6 and practical ideas that can easily be transferred to the classroom. 

To support immediate implementation at school, all participants will receive a handout of the presentation slides, along with teaching notes for Lulu Gets a Cat by Anna McQuinn and Rosalind Beardshaw; Circle by Jeannie Baker and Hummingbird by Nicola Davies and Jane Ray; and Suffragette: The Battle for Equality by David Roberts.

This webinar is delivered via Zoom. Once a place has been secured, the participant will receive a pre-registration email three days before the training date with details on how to join the session.
