Supporting Early Reading Development for Younger and Older Readers 

In partnership with Barrington Stoke publishing.

This conference is suitable for all those working with children from the Early Years through to KS2.

All children deserve to become readers and enjoy the lifelong benefits of reading for pleasure. This conference will enable delegates to explore the journeys that children make in order to become readers. They will recognise that every child has different starting points and their rate and pattern of progression will depend on many factors.

Throughout the day, delegates will strengthen their subject knowledge and explore effective pedagogy that will support children to develop from early reading to independence.

Sue Ellis, Professor of Education, Strathclyde University

Mairi Kidd, Managing Director of Barrington Stoke publishers

Tony Bradman, author of The Boy and The Globe and Chair of the Siobhan Dowd Trust

Including workshops outlining approaches that engage, inspire and ensure progress for Early Readers

The CLPE teaching team will share their expertise in teaching reading across the Early Years, KS1 and KS2. The workshops will focus on:

• Supporting assessment and progress of early readers using the CLPE Reading Scale
• Supporting book choice
• Tuning children in to print
• Deepening reader response
• Facilitating early reading experiences

The workshops will enable teachers to inspire and challenge early readers to learn in ways that reflect their life experience.

The Raising Readers conference will:

• Address the importance of ensuring early readers can decode to enable them to access print
• Show how we can deepen early readers’ responses to texts and help them to read for meaning
• Recognise the factors that prevent progress and how to overcome barriers
• Understand what progression looks like in reading and how to use the Reading Scale to support teaching and assessment.
