Don't miss out on a place on a fully-funded NPQ for Leading Literacy delivered by CLPE in partnership with UCL

CLPE in partnership with UCL are running this fully-funded programme in London, to support Literacy Leaders in developing leadership skills, enhancing their curriculum and supporting reading, writing and oracy in their schools. The NPQLL programme will begin in February 2024.

Our February 2024 cohort is the last intake to be fully funded by the DfE.

What will I learn?

  • Leading Literacy Teaching - you will use what you learn to support teachers at all levels in your school to develop their knowledge of literacy development and literacy learning improving their literacy teaching in 3 core areas:
    • Developing language - within the context of your role, you will learn how to develop your school’s oracy teaching and provision and how to support your colleagues to maximise the opportunities to model and develop high-quality speaking and listening and to ensure high-quality talk is prioritised in the classroom.
    • Developing reading - you will learn how language development underpins reading development, you will deepen your knowledge of the key theories of reading teaching and learning from the perspectives of different learners.
    • Developing writing - you will deepen your knowledge of how to develop pupils' written transcription by working with colleagues to ensure that they know how to teach spelling, handwriting and sentence construction.
  • Professional development - you will deepen your knowledge of the best ways to provide effective professional development in literacy curriculum, pedagogy and assessment across the whole school community. You will engage in leading and developing a team of teachers focused on improving literacy attainment across your school.
  • Implementation – focusing on literacy, you will learn how to implement change successfully within your context by understanding the stages of implementation and applying them with the support of your facilitators and colleagues.

The programme runs at CLPE's Professional Development Centre in Central London. All sessions are delivered face-to-face in the Literacy Library, a unique 25,000 volume resource, which enables us to place high-quality children’s literature at the heart of our ethos and practice. Between each session, a supportive peer network and a wealth of resources are available to support self-directed learning.

The programme comprises six sessions starting in February 2024, ending with final assessment in February 2025.

How to apply:

  1. Have your Teacher Reference Number to hand. If you’re not a teacher you can still register, but you’ll need to request a TRN. Guidance on how to do this is provided as part of the online application form in step 2.
  2. Visit the DfE website here.
  3. Complete the online form by clicking the <start now> box on the DFE website page and ensure that you choose UCL IOE as your preferred NPQ provider
  4. Once registration is complete the DFE will send the details to UCL IOE.
  5. Upon receiving the details of registration from the DfE, UCL IOE will send you a link to a short application form, that you will be invited to complete. The form requires headteacher/principal’s and line manager details. You will be invited to choose your preferred Delivery Partner, please select CLPE if you’d like to receive the training from CLPE. This form will need to be returned within 5 days of receipt.
  6. Once step 5 is complete, you will be contacted by CLPE and UCL with information about programme including training dates and how to access the course materials.
