Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths
COLLECTION
LiteratureYEAR GROUP
Years 3 and 4Danny Chung would much rather pursue his passion for art than learn maths, which he struggles with, but his parents - especially his father, who insists on giving lectures on "the Chinese way" - refuse to entertain the idea. Things get even more complicated when Danny's grandmother moves into their family home - and into Danny's room! - from China, and Danny is charged with looking after her despite not even speaking the same language. Can they ever hope to find common ground?
A warmly witty chapter-book, set in Birmingham with a diverse cast, about friendship, family and identity, and most importantly trying to live authentically under the weight of both familial and societal expectations by embracing all the different parts of yourself that make you who you are.
Danny's artwork (illustrations by Anh Cao) frequently appears in the margins of the text, which along with the first-person narration brings us further into Danny's world.
